DeepSeek Announces Suspension of Non-+86 Registrations Due to Large-Scale Malicious Attack

DeepSeek Suspends Non-+86 Registrations Due to Cyberattack

DeepSeek, the rapidly emerging Chinese AI startup, has temporarily suspended all registrations for phone numbers outside of the +86 country code following a large-scale cyberattack on its online services. The company announced on January 28 that existing users can still log in normally and thanked everyone for their understanding and support.

Despite the cyberattack, DeepSeek continues to show strong performance in the AI industry. The company has surpassed ChatGPT in downloads on the Apple App Store, sparking significant reactions in the AI market. The rise of DeepSeek has also led to a decline in the stock prices of major tech companies like Nvidia.

Founded in 2023, DeepSeek has quickly become a major competitor in the U.S. generative AI market, surpassing OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini to become one of the most downloaded apps on the Apple App Store.

DeepSeek stands out for its cost-efficient model training, with an expenditure of just $5.6 million, far lower than its competitors, who spend hundreds of millions on similar projects. Founder Liang Wenfeng stated that China can no longer afford to lag behind in AI innovation, emphasizing the gap between originality and imitation.

This rapid rise has caused a major disruption in the market. Nvidia, a key supplier of AI chips, saw its stock plummet more than 16% on January 27, losing over $500 billion in market value. Other tech giants, including Google's parent company Alphabet, Microsoft, and Amazon, have also been affected, with stock prices falling as well.
